Introduction of Cobbler Chinnaiah |
When Chinnaiah got up he saw those foot prints on the flour and
was overwhelmed in joy. He sang in praise of the Lord and with devotion
stitched a beautiful pair of chappals for the Lord. He exhibited
all his skill in the art and made the chappals very attractive
He put flowers on those chappals, performed Puja and carried them
on his head for presentation to the Lord. Uttering the name of the
Lord he slowly reached Tirupati.
From Tirupati he proceeded to Alipiri, the foot of the Hills.
When he tried to climb the Hills, the chaste Hindu guards staying
there objected to his climbing the Hills saying that he was an untouchable
and therefore cannot be permitted to climb the Hills.
Chinnaiah requested them, begged them to permit him to fulfil
his vow to the Lord. He pleaded that he was also a human being and
that there could be no difference between man and man on account
of caste and that all were equal before the eyes of the Lord. The
guards were not convinced. They were guided by orders of their authorities.
They never paid heed to Chinnaiah's words. And when he attempted
to proceed, they pushed him down with sticks.
Chinnaiah wept. In an appealing tone he cried out: 'O, Lord You
are the Saviour of the entire race. How then are you allowing this
caste discrimination? Why should I be treated an untouchable. Should
we be debarred from visiting your temple? Is there none to come
to our rescue? Is there no way out of this ?'
Hearing these words, the guards tried to chase him out from there.
He again appealed to the Lord: ”O, Lord, you are present even
in insects. Yet only in human face you have permitted these differences.
I cannot even for a moment live without seeing your face. O, kind
hearted God, if I am unable to see you I will here and now end my
life. At least after my death you may teach people to end the caste
differences making them realise that there is none as untouchable
in your creation and you do not approve of this ,discrimination
any longer."
Taking Chinnaiah to have gone mad, the guards tried to hit him
with sticks. One such stroke hit Chinnaiah on his head and there
was profuse bleeding. Chinnaiah uttering, Govinda, Govinda fell
unconscious.
At midnight that day. Sri Hari made his presence before Chinnaiah.
He lifted him up and consoled him. Seeing the presence of the Lord
before him, Chinnaiah forgot everything and in joy cried, "O,
Lord, You have come all the way to help me. How kind You are?"
He feet upon His feet, touched it and put the chappals prepared
by him on to His feet.
Srinivasa smiled and looking at the chappals said, 'Dear Bhaktha,
I appreciate your devotion and the skill. These chappals I will
treasure.' Every midnight I will wear these on my way to Tiruchanur
to meet my consort Padmavati and at day break leave them here before
I return to Ananda Nilayam. And all the Pilgrims to, my place will
touch these chappals with their head in utmost devotion before they
have my darshan. Such people will also receive my blessings for
health and happiness.
On seeing this, the guards begged pardon of Chinnaiah for having-
wounded his feelings and he was considered a great Bhaktha of Lord
Venkateswara The chappals were placed at the entrance of the hills
and puja performed daily.
Pilgrims built a temple there and put the chappals in it Chinnaiah
after sometime attained mukthi. Even today Chinnaiah's statue is
there at Alipiri and all the pilgrims worship him.
Thus Chinnaiah was responsible for the removal of untouchability
among human beings. Nowadays people in large numbers irrespective
of caste, visit Tirupati and have the Lord's darshan. With the movement
of pilgrims all round the year, Tirupati has gone famous and it
is popularly known as Kaliyuga Vaikuntam. Those who read, hear or
write this story and visit Tirupati shrine will be blessed by the
Lord with health, weal th and happiness.
